Charter Fishing in Loreto

The Baja California city of Loreto has something to offer everyone: available tourist activities and attractions draw everyone from sport fishermen to history buffs.

Long before Monterey and Sacramento, Loreto was the capital city of La provincial de las Californias” back when the entire Pacific Coast from the present-day Oregon border south was under Spanish rule. In fact, El Camino Real - “The Royal Highway” – which terminates in Sonoma County and roughly parallels today’s U.S. 101 actually begins in Loreto. The Mission of Our Lady of Loreto was founded here in 1752; in the surrounding mountains are rock and cave paintings by Stone Age hunters that are on UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites.

Of course, Loreto’s main attractions – and chief economic activities – are centered on sport fishing. Summer and winter comprise two distinct sport fishing seasons in the waters around Loreto: summer is the time for sports fishermen to go after the prized marlin, dorado and sailfish, while yellowtail jurel, snapper and seabass are more plentiful during the winter months.

Also known by its Polynesian name mahi-mahi, the dorado is Loreto sports fishermen’s best-known and beloved catch; the season begins toward the end of May and ends in November, with the prime fishing weeks from late July through September.

The clear blue waters and biodiversity of the gulf make for excellent scuba-diving as well as kayaking and recreational sailing. For a change from marine recreation, tourists can also play a round of golf at the Nopolo Golf Course six miles south of the city, as well as tennis. Opportunities for camping are also available at the area’s many beaches. These are full-service campsites with as many or as few amenities as you desire.

Regular flights from major California airports service Loreto, making it easy and convenient to reach. Learn more about Loreto and all the tourist services it has to offer by going to MexicanCharters.com
