Sport Fishing Charters Puerto Vallarta

Situated on the Bay of Banderas, Puerto Vallarta is one of Mexico’s larger cities, and definitely one of that country’s more interesting and varied tourist destinations. Puerto Vallarta not only offers world-class sport fishing, but also history, culture and eco-tours.

Archaeologists have found evidence of human habitation dating back almost 2600 years; little is known about those early inhabitants, although it is known that a Mayan-speaking culture existed in the area between the tenth and thirteenth centuries C.E. Conquistador Hernan Cortes engaged in a battle with a local indigenous army in 1524 (according to Spanish chronicles, this Indian army numbered between 10,000 and 20,000 individual warriors, but this is probably exaggeration) which resulted in his taking control of the region for the Spanish crown. The nearby valley and bay was subsequently named for the colorful banners (banderas) carried by the Indians.

Later, Puerto Vallarta was port of call of the Manila Galleons sailing between the Philippines and New Spain, and was long a hotspot for smuggling and piracy. During the 19th and 20th centuries, the area around Bahia de Banderas was dominated by commercial farming and mining operations. The modern tourist resort developed during the 1960s, partially as a result of American expatriates – writers and intellectuals who fled the repression of McCarthyism and the “Red” Hysteria of the port World War II era (one of the neighborhoods was named “Gringo Gulch”). Sport fishing in Banderas Bay is one of the best-kept secrets in Mexico; other tourist activities include golf, off-road bicycling and bungee jumping as well as eco-tours of the local forests.
