Charter Fishing in Rocky Point (Puerto Penasco)
Sometimes known as the "Gulf of California," the Sea of Cortez - named for the 16th Century conquistador -is world renowned for its sport fishing. Most of the shoreline communities that host such fishing are at difficult to reach at best.
Puerto Penasco is an exception. Located in the northwestern corner of the Sea of Cortez on the Mexican mainland, Puerto Pe–asco is easily accessible by automobile, located only three hours from the Phoenix-Tuscon metro area. Regular bus service from Las Vegas and Yuma is also available. Currently, the Mexican government is constructing a new highway that will facilitate auto travel from Southern California and Yuma. (In fact, but for some fast talking, smooth negotiations and some old-fashioned "back-room" politics, Puerto Pe–asco might today have been an Arizona beach town - but that's another story.)
"Puerto Penasco" means "Port of Rocks" - and the name is fitting. The Mexican state of Sonora, in which Puerto Penasco is located, has some of the harshest terrain and climate in North America. It's a wonder that any town should have ever been established in this location. Until the first paved road arrived reached Puerto Pe–asco during the Second World War, fresh water had to be brought in by wagon from sixty miles away through sagebrush, cactus and sand.
It was the shrimp industry that gave birth to the community. Since shrimp fishing has declined over the past several years, many boat owners have turned to to the tourist and sport fishing trade. As a result, many bargains may be available to sport fishermen who come to Puerto Penasco. In addition, the town provides several amenities for tourists such as restaurants and nightclubs as well as camp sites and RV parks.
