Charter Fishing in San Carlos (Sonora)
San Carlos is actually a beachfront neighborhood of the port town of Guayamas, located about six hours south of the U.S. border along Mexico Federal Highway 15. Located where desert meets the sea, the offshore waters are shallow, warm and exceptionally clear; in addition to sport fishing, the community is a haven for snorkeling and scuba diving.
Although the population numbers less than 7,000, like most Mexican beach communities, San Carlos has many amenities that cater to the U.S. tourist trade, including RV parks, resort hotels and retail stores. It's worth noting that the special permit normally required for those traveling by private vehicle is not necessary for those people who do not intend to go further south than Guayamas.
Although Guayamas itself dates back several decades (when it was originally part of a huge, privately-owned hacienda), the community of San Carlos really owes its existence to the U.S. and Mexican film industries. The spectacular desert scenery caught the eye of several Hollywood directors; famous films such as Catch-22 and the more recent Mask of Zorro(which starred luminaries Antonio Banderas, Catherine Zeta-Jones and veteran actor Anthony Hopkins) were filmed here, as well as a popular Mexican soap opera, Por Tu Amor("For Your Love").The result of this activity was the construction of several hotels and resorts, which remain to this day.
