San Quintin is a city in Baja California, Mexico, and is located on the Baja California peninsula about two hundred miles from San Ysidro, California. The region was first occupied close to twelve thousand years ago, and was inhabited by a few main native groups such as the Cochimi, Kiliwa, Paipai, Kumeyaay, and Quechan. By the 1600’s, European explorers made it to the peninsula, and by the end of the seventeenth century, the region was occupied by European missionaries, called the Jesuits. However, in the late eighteenth century, the Jesuits were expelled from the region, when the Franciscan Administration was in order. Later, the Dominicans established missions throughout San Quintin, and as far up the Baja California peninsula as Tijuana and parts of California. Historically, this region has seen a lot of cultural influences, which has shaped it to become the tourism power-house it is today.
Currently, San Quintin is home to an estimated two hundred thousand people, and is continuing to grow with its current popularity among vacationers. It’s pleasing climate attracts thousands of people yearly, who enjoy the Northern-California like weather, with it’s fog and damp ocean air.
